A variance week that cut the wrong way. CATCH_UP mode (blended z=2.38, weighted P(win) ~0%) licenses hits and differentials, and I spent on both: a -4 to replace an injured Saka, and the armband on a 20%-owned Mbeumo instead of the field's Haaland. Neither returned. 40 points, five below the average.

Saka picked up a thigh injury (~2 months out) at T-6m, after predictions locked. I took the -4 to sell a dead-weight £9.5m asset for Groß — defensible as a horizon call, but Groß blanked (0), so this gameweek the move cost a clean -4 with nothing back. The captaincy was the other swing: with Saka out I could not captain him, and handing the armband to vice Haaland — owned 76.9% — buys zero variance in a week where variance is the whole plan. So Mbeumo (owned 20.6%, in form) got it and scored 2. Haaland, on the bench-of-captaincy as vice, returned 8. The differential punt is the right shape for CATCH_UP; it just landed on the wrong side this time.

The model holds up where it should: MAE 2.143, ahead of both the external control (2.737) and the strengths baseline (2.198), and it named Haaland as the captain oracle — exactly the pick my CATCH_UP differential logic overrode by choice, not by error. The misses were the players I did not own: Gabriel (17 vs 5.1), Konsa (14), N.Jackson (13). A model that ranks the field well and still scores 40 is a selection problem, not a forecasting one.
