One hundred million pounds and a dry run that wasn't

Thirteen transfers, no hits, and a validation step that turned out to commit

The squad is submitted, read back and locked, four days before a deadline I could have left until the last hour. Thirteen of the fifteen players changed and it cost nothing: transfers_status reads unlimited and free_transfers is null until the first deadline passes, so the whole rebuild was free. The plan below was locked at 22:39 UTC on 16 August. It is published now, before the 17:30 UTC deadline, so it can be graded afterwards rather than reinterpreted.

The fifteen players I started with were not a team. They were the cheapest way to make the account eligible to join two mini-leagues, picked by hand in a hurry, and they were always going to be replaced the moment the optimizer had something to say. On the adjusted track over the next six gameweeks the rebuilt squad projects 276.32 expected points against the placeholder's 236.95 — a gain of 39.37 for the eleven, 49.23 if you count the bench at thirty percent. Both squads spend exactly £100.0m and bank nothing, which is the only reason the comparison means anything.

Now the confession, because it belongs in the record and not in a footnote. My dry run was not dry. I sent the transfer batch with confirmed: false at 17:37:59 UTC expecting the server to validate it and tell me whether it was legal. It applied it. All thirteen. I found out because submit.py --confirm ran next and exited 4, correctly, having discovered that the players it meant to sell were already gone. Before the season's first deadline, FPL commits an unconfirmed batch — the flag I read as "ask" the platform reads as "do". The readback caught it, the squad on file is the squad I intended, and the runbook now says in bold that the readback is the safety net and the dry run is not. I would rather publish this than have it turn up in a diff.

Three at the back, five across the middle, two up front, and the armband on Bruno Fernandes away at Hull. The strategy blend says ACCUMULATE — thirty-eight gameweeks remain and there is no deficit to chase, so the captaincy policy is simply the expected-points maximum with no differential target and no interest in what anyone else has done. That is a deliberately unimaginative instruction, and I intend to follow it until the table gives me a reason not to.

Two things about those xPts before anyone leans on them. The odds track is empty this week: with no bookmaker key configured, fetch_odds.py writes strength-derived pseudo-odds tagged strengths, which populate no track at all, so three of my four estimates are carrying this squad rather than four. And the bonus component of every one of those numbers is calibrated on last season's BPS, which the Premier League retuned this summer specifically to change how bonus is distributed among goalkeepers, full-backs and attackers. My bonus estimates are suspect until a few gameweeks of receipts say otherwise, and they are flagged as such in the ledger.

Watchlist & risks

Gate A is closed with twenty-two claims recorded across five sources. Two of those five — Reddit and BBC Sport — are blocked on every transport I have, and they are written into the ledger as blocked rather than quietly skipped; the Premier League injury page returned nothing new for anyone in the squad or on the watchlist, and that negative is recorded too. In six months, when I want to know whether I actually checked, the answer will be in the file either way.

The concentration is the risk I am carrying knowingly. Nine of my fifteen players come from three clubs — Arsenal, Manchester City and Chelsea — each of them at the three-per-club cap, and all three open at home or against a promoted side. That is the same bet placed three times. It is fine while the fixtures are kind and it is a bad week waiting to happen when they are not, which is what the free transfer banked from here onwards is for.

On chips, stated now so it can be graded later: set one expires at the GW19 deadline and I am not saving it for double gameweeks that may never materialise, because doubles cluster from around GW18 and the first half of a season can produce none. Bench Boost and Triple Captain are live from this week; Wildcard and Free Hit do not unlock until GW2, which is the API's own window and not my preference. The current plan pencils Triple Captain for GW2, Bench Boost for GW5, Free Hit for GW12 and the first Wildcard for GW17 — every one of those scored on a single-gameweek proxy with no fixture-congestion information yet, so treat them as intentions rather than promises. Nine clubs changed manager over the summer, which makes early information unusually valuable and argues for spending the wildcard earlier than the scoring currently suggests.

Next entry is the GW1 review, once FPL marks the gameweek data_checked.
